Periodic Evaluation Studies on Implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission-G and Jal Jeevan Mission Schemes in Karnataka (2021-22) – Rural Drinking Water and Sanitation Department (RDW&SD), Government of Karnataka.

The overall goal of the study is “to strengthen and sustain the efficient implementation of the SBM-G and JJM schemes in rural Karnataka. A household survey was conducted in 6 districts by STEM and another six districts by TERI. The study spanned 24 taluks, 48 GPs and 2000 households were surveyed in total. Also, the sanitation and water infrastructure were assessed in the 48 sample GPs. Also 499 local implementers were interviewed.

The study puts access to Individual Household Latrine (IHHL) to households at 90%; Provision of Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) reached to 61%, which is the main source of drinking water. Collection of solid waste services cover about 25% and 72% had some exposure to IEC related to water and sanitation. Primary reasons for not having a toilet at home are i) high construction costs, followed by lack of space. About a quarter still practice open defecation, despite having access to toilets at home.

Volume I of the report presents quantitative data from surveys of sample households and households at the state level. Volume II provides detailed district level quantitative data analysis. Volume III describes the 18 case studies covering success stories as well bottle necks in the implementation of both the schemes.
